Caring for an elderly family member – how to make the tough decisions
Modern medicine and medical technology have extended the longevity of life expectancy among senior adults. This phenomenon has created what sociologist call ” Sandwhich Generation”. The term refers to people, most of them between the ages of 40 and 69, who find themselves sandwhiched between, having to care for, two generations of dependent family members at the same time.
On one hand, individuals in this group are concerned about their aging parents; on the other hand, they are still involved in caring for their own children. In 2005 eldercare replaced childcare as the number one concern for working adults.
